Boylegs vs Boxer Briefs vs Biker Shorts: Which Length Suits You?
You know the feeling. You're out, you're having a nice time, and then it starts: the slow crawl of your undies riding up, the thigh rub that turns into a proper sting by lunchtime, or that little panic when you catch a panty line in a shop window. So you do the discreet tug-and-shuffle and hope nobody noticed. If any of that sounds familiar, we promise it's not you. It's almost always the wrong length.
Here's the thing most people never get told: no two bodies are the same. Two women can wear the exact same dress size and have completely different waist, hip and thigh measurements. That's exactly why we make our undies in three leg lengths instead of one, so you can pick the amount of coverage that actually works for your body, not settle for whatever the packet gave you.
So let's clear it up properly. Boylegs, boxer briefs and biker shorts, what's the real difference, and which one is right for you? The short version is that it all comes down to how much thigh coverage you want. Here's the long version.
Quick comparison
| Length | Style | Best for | What it fixes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3" Boylegs | Cheeky, barely-there coverage | Under leggings, shorts, fitted skirts | No VPL, no wedgies |
| 5" Boxer Briefs | Our most-loved everyday length | Everyday wear, lounging, sleeping | No chafing |
| 8" Biker Shorts | Max coverage, tapered leg | Fuller thighs, dresses, long days on your feet | No ride-up, no chafing |
Boxers or briefs: what's the real difference?
Let's start with the basics, because this trips a lot of people up. Regular briefs stop right at the leg. Nothing runs down your thigh, so they're light, but there's also nothing between your thighs to stop the rub. That's fine until it's warm, or you're walking a lot, or you've got a dress on and your thighs are saying hello to each other with every step.
Boxer-style undies fix that. A bit of leg gives your thighs something to glide against instead of each other, so the chafing just stops. That's the whole idea behind our range: instead of the old brief cut, we build everything around leg length, 3", 5" and 8". Once you're choosing by length, the only real question left is how much coverage you actually want. So let's go through them.
3" Boylegs: light, invisible, no VPL

These are our barely-there option, and the shortest cut we make. Light, low-bulk, and cut to vanish under leggings, shorts, jeans or a fitted skirt. No visible panty lines, no wedgies, nothing showing through. If you're petite, love a shorter hemline, or you just want to forget you've got undies on at all, these are the ones you'll reach for.
They're the go-to for fitted outfits and warmer days, when you want the least amount of fabric without giving up on comfort. And a fair warning: people get a little attached to how these look. Real things customers have actually told us include "I had to stop myself from saying 'feel my bum!'" and "I swear my bum felt 30 years younger." You've been warned.
One honest note: because the 3" is our shortest leg, it sits higher on the thigh. If you've got fuller thighs, or ride-up is your main worry, the 5" or 8" will stay put better. But if minimal coverage and a barely-there feel is what you're after, nothing beats the boyleg.

5" Boxer Briefs: our most-loved all-rounder

If you're not sure where to start, start here. The 5" is the happy middle: enough leg to stop your thighs rubbing, but not so much that it feels like you're wearing shorts under your clothes. It's our most popular length by a mile, and honestly it just works.
Under jeans, under work pants, under a dress, in bed, on the couch, at the gym, it does the lot. It's the one most people order first and then come back for in three more prints. Enough coverage to keep chafing away all day, light enough that you forget it's there. If you want one length that handles ninety percent of your week, this is it.

8" Biker Shorts: no ride-up, no chafing

This is max coverage and max stay-put. The longer leg tapers and sits lower on the thigh, which is exactly why these are loved by curvier ladies, taller ladies, and anyone with fuller thighs. If ride-up or all-day chafing is your biggest gripe, this is the one that finally sorts it.
They're brilliant under a flowy dress or a longer skirt, on your feet all day at work, or just worn on their own for lounging around the house. And if you've been reaching for gym bike shorts under your dresses to stop the chafe, you already know the problem: they're thick, hot and bulky, like wearing an extra sweaty layer. Ours aren't. Same light, breathable fabric as the rest of the range, thin enough to disappear under a dress, but with all the coverage you need.

Seamless by design: why the hem matters as much as the length
Length is only half the story. The edges matter just as much, and this is where a lot of undies quietly fail. A normal sewn hem leaves a raised ridge that digs into your skin, rolls down as you move, and prints a line straight through your leggings. Not ideal.
Every Pure Snug waistband and hem is hot-pressed instead of stitched. That means the edge is bonded flat, with no bulky seam sitting on your skin and nothing to show through your clothes. It's why our hems don't roll or curl over time the way stitched elastic does, and it's a big part of why nothing digs in. Someone asked us recently, "a waistband that doesn't dig in, sure, but does it roll?" Nope. No dig-ins, no roll-ups. The finish moves with you instead of fighting you, wash after wash.
Which length stops ride-up best?
Ride-up is a mix of fabric, fit and construction, but length does most of the heavy lifting. If it's your main worry, go longer. The 8" biker shorts are your best bet: the extra length tapers and stays snug around the leg, instead of sitting at a point where fabric can bunch up and climb. The 5" boxer briefs are the next best for the same reason. The 3" boyleg, being the shortest, is the most likely to shift, so it's the one to skip if ride-up bothers you more than panty lines do.
The fabric: TENCEL™ Micro Modal
Every style, boyleg through to biker, is made from the same TENCEL™ Micro Modal. It's a plant-based fibre spun from sustainably sourced beechwood, sometimes called "vegan silk" for how soft it feels, and it's honestly the thing customers rave about most. Here's why it matters:
- Cool in the heat. "Won't these be hot in summer?" is easily the question we get most. They do look cosy, don't they? But they're much lighter than they look. The fibre producer rates Micro Modal as more breathable than cotton, so it doesn't trap heat against your skin.
- Dries faster than bamboo. Sweat moves away quicker, so there's no swampy feeling on hot, humid days.
- Antibacterial gusset. A soft viscose-lined layer right where it counts, for that extra bit of freshness.
- Stays soft. It doesn't stiffen or pill the way cotton blends tend to after a few dozen washes.
Put that fabric together with the hot-pressed edges and the anti-chafe part isn't just a line on a label. It's a genuinely soft, breathable layer with no scratchy seams to bother skin that's already prone to rubbing. That's the whole point of Pure Snug in one sentence.
How to choose: three quick scenarios
Still deciding? Here's the shortcut:
- Wearing a dress or skirt: go 5" boxer briefs or 8" biker shorts, for the most secure, no-ride-up fit under fabric that swishes around as you move.
- Petite, or you just want zero panty lines: the 3" boylegs, light, smooth and invisible under fitted clothes.
- Fuller thighs, on your feet all day, or heading to the gym: the 8" biker shorts, the tapered leg is built to stay exactly where you put it.
Quick sizing tip: our sizes run a little big, so if you're between sizes, size down for your first pair. You'll get that snugger, stay-put fit that keeps ride-up away. Loads of customers tell us the same thing afterwards: "they fit, but next time I'll size down." And if it's still not quite right, our Love at First Snug Guarantee has you sorted, no return needed.

Frequently asked questions
Are boxer briefs good for women?
Yes! Our 5" boxer briefs are cut for a woman's hips and thighs, with a bit of leg that stops chafing whether you're at work, travelling or at the gym. They're designed from scratch for us, not just men's undies made smaller.
What's the difference between boylegs and boxer briefs?
Boylegs (3") are a shorter, lighter cut designed to get rid of visible panty lines with minimal coverage. Boxer briefs (5") add more leg for proper anti-chafe protection, while still feeling like everyday undies rather than shorts.
Which length is best for stopping ride-up?
The 8" biker shorts. The extra length creates a naturally tapered hem that stays snug around the leg rather than sitting where fabric can bunch. It's helped along by our hot-pressed waistband and hems too, which have no raised seam to dig in or roll.
Won't they be hot in summer?
Totally fair, that's what most people think at first. They do look cosy, but they're much lighter than they look. Made from breathable TENCEL™ Micro Modal (more breathable than cotton, dries faster than bamboo), so they're built to keep you cool on hot, humid days.
If it's an Australian company, why are the lengths in inches, not centimetres?
Fair question. For underwear, leg lengths are more universally described in inches (3", 5", 8"), especially as we also sell to the US and UK. It just makes styles easier to compare. Our size chart includes both inches and cm.
Where are Pure Snug undies made?
Good question. We actually spent months looking into making them here, but the specialised hot-press machinery we use isn't feasible to run in Australia at a fair price yet. They're made in China with OEKO-TEX certified fabrics, while our support, warehousing and shipping all stay right here in Australia.
What are they made from?
TENCEL™ Micro Modal, a soft, plant-based fibre spun from sustainably sourced beechwood. It's breathable, quick-drying and gentle on skin, with an antibacterial viscose-lined gusset. We've also got a cotton range with an organic cotton gusset.
How do I wash them?
Cold wash and air-dry is the golden rule. TENCEL™ Modal is beautifully soft but a little delicate, and high dryer heat can loosen the hot-pressed hem over time. If you can't air-dry, a low tumble setting is your safest bet.
Can I wear them for swimming?
No. They're made for everyday comfort, not for water, chlorine and sun. Swimwear uses a completely different, more durable fabric.
What if my first pair doesn't work out?
Pure Snug offers the Love at First Snug Guarantee: try a pair, and if it doesn't live up to expectations, you'll get a refund on your first pair. No return needed.
